Youxing Zhang Killed in Bicycle Crash on Highway 24 in Oakland

Oakland, California (May 17, 2019) – 83-year-old Youxing Zhang was the bicyclist who was fatally struck by a car Wednesday afternoon along Highway 24, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner reported.

The accident happened just after 3 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of the highway just west of the Martin Luther King Jr. Way off-ramp.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene and learnt that Zhang was riding his bicycle along the right-hand shoulder when he crossed into traffic lanes.

The driver of a Toyota Prius traveling in the No. 2 lane was not able to stop in time and hit Zhang at about 60 mph.

Zhang was pronounced dead at the scene.

At least one eastbound lane remained closed as investigators worked the scene.

The accident is under an active investigation.
