1 Killed in Bakersfield Multi-Car Crash at Mt. Vernon Avenue and Niles Street

Bakersfield, California (May 21, 2020) – One person was killed in a multi-vehicle collision that happened on Thursday morning in East Bakersfield.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened in the area of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Niles Street near the East Bakersfield High School at about 2 a.m. May 21.

22-year-old Ashley Garness was driving a Honda Civic on the roadway when he allegedly ran a red light and hit a Volvo C70 and Nissan Sentra.

An unidentified passenger in the Honda Civic died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the Volvo suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Garness, who sustained moderate injuries in the accident, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The collision blocked Mt. Vernon Avenue between Niles and Oregon Streets.

The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident.
