Willits, California (May 14, 2021) – A man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Willits on Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly motorcycle accident happened on Highway 101 at about 3 a.m. May 13.

Michael L. Confer, 30, of Crescent City, was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Highway 101 when he drifted into the opposite lanes and collided head-on with an oncoming 2007 BMW motorcycle.

The impact of the collision sent the motorcycle and the rider, who has since been identified as 68-year-old Wayne A. Berry, over the side of the elevated highway.

The Pontiac caught fire after the collision.

Berry, a resident of San Luis Obispo, was killed in the accident.

Confer sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
