Woman Killed, 4 Children Injured in Head-On Collision on Phoenix Lake Road in Sonora

Sonora, California (October 28, 2020) – A 33-year-old Sonora woman was killed and five other people, among them four children, were injured in a suspected DUI car accident that happened on Monday evening in Sonora.

The accident happened at around 6:15 p.m. October 24, on Phoenix Lake Road near Bear Cub Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Augustus Matthew Marinovich, 19, of Sonora, was driving a 2002 Toyota pickup truck westbound on Phoenix Lake Road at a high rate of speed.

For unknown reasons, Marinovich lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with a 1996 Suzuki SUV.

The SUV driver was killed in the crash.

Four children riding in the SUV suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

Marinovich was also seriously injured and was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Marinovich was later arrested and charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Additional details about the crash were not provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
