Berkeley, California- Bicyclist left critical after Serious Car Crash

UC Berkeley campus shaken by serious car crash: May 10, 2016

On February 2nd, Berkeley Police received calls about a crash that occurred near Fulton Street and Bancroft Way. A female cyclist, whose age is unknown and was later discovered to be 42-year-old Meg Schwarzian, was stuck by a vehicle as she was traveling south on Fulton. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, after she was recovered from under the vehicle. The vehicle was reported ,by Lt. Dan Montgomery, to have dragged her a short distance after she was struck. Lt. Dan Montgomery also reported that the Berkeley Fire Department arrived on the scene within 2 minutes and was quickly followed a minute later by police. The intersection at which the accident occurred was shut down during the investigation. 47-year-old Berwick Haynes, the driver of the vehicle that struck Schwarzman was arrested at 10:15 pm, after police suspected Haynes was driving under the influence. Meg Schwarzman, who is a physician and mother, is expected to survive, but must undergo a long recovery.
