Most freeways prohibit bicyclists from travelling on them, especially in the traffic lanes and the far left lane. Eduardo Castillo was riding in the car pool lane on US 10 going through LA County on April 10, 2016. It was 4:30 am and for some unknown reason, he was riding in the carpool lane, and he was hit from behind by a Metro bus.

The speed limit on US 10 is 65 mph, so Eduardo was hit with tremendous force, and the impact catapulted him onto the railroad tracks where he landed. He was declared dead at the scene. There were no witnesses, so there is no explanation as to why Eduardo was cycling on the freeway or if he had lights on his bike.

This biking accident is the 32nd biking fatality that has occurred in Southern California this year. The total number of biking fatalities in the state of California in 2014 was 328.

Bicycling in itself is not a dangerous sport, but when someone rides on highly trafficked streets, they must be aware and extremely careful of the traffic around them.

LAPD suggests that riders wear bright colors so he or she can be easily seen, a helmet for protection, and have lights on the front and back of the bicycle.
