Santa Rosa – A pedestrian who police believe may have been under the influence of alcohol was struck and killed Monday night, police say.
When Santa Rosa police officers responded to the intersection of Lewis Road and Mendocino Ave. they found an unresponsive man on the sidewalk. Witnesses told officers the man had been struck by a vehicle.
The man, later identified as Grover Cleveland Duffield III, 64, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
Duffield was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
The driver of the maroon Toyota Tundra that struck Duffield was identified as Robert Arlington, 63, of Santa Rosa.
He says that Duffield walked in front of his vehicle and he didn’t have time to brake. Witnesses at the scene backed up Arlington’s claim.
Arlington did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
After he was questioned, he was allowed to leave the scene, according to a spokesperson with the Santa Rosa Police Department.
