A head-on crash, occurred at 3.56, on Thursday, December 23rd, 2016, involving a Nissan Sentra Sedan and big rig truck. Video from arriving Gardena Police Department units showed the Nissan Sentra totaled, and the big rig truck sustaining damage to its front grill. The accident halted traffic in both lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office declared the Nissan Sentra driver, Ruth Navas, of Los Angeles, dead at the scene, along the 1200 block of El Segundo Boulevard, in Gardena. Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel extricated a female passenger from the Nissan Sentra, with the Jaws of Lif,e and taken to a local trauma center, and hospitalized for treatment, and observation.
Witnesses to the accident told investigators the driver of the Nissan Sentra could be seen with a cell phone in her hands as she crossed over the center line, into the eastbound lanes. The Nissan Sentra hit the big rig truck, as it waited in a center turning lane, to make a left turn.
