1 Killed, 5 Injured in Suspected DUI Crash on I-26 in Spartanburg County
Spartanburg County, South Carolina (March 30, 2018) – One person was killed while five others were injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Thursday night in Spartanburg County, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The accident took place at around 11 p.m. Thursday, March 29, on Interstate 26 near Mile er 29.
Troopers said Scott Simpson, 40, of Inman, was driving a 2009 Chevy 4-door sedan westbound on I-26 when he crashed into the rear of a 2016 Subaru 4-door, driven by Donald Ray Bain, 80, of Spartanburg.
The impact pushed Bain’s vehicle off the left shoulder of the roadway and into the median. Simpson drifted off the right side of the roadway, then stepped out of his car and fled the scene on foot.
Troopers said as Bain got out of his vehicle to check on the damage, he was hit by a westbound Ford 4-door sedan, driven by a 39-year-old Rembert resident. The Ford then traveled off the side of the roadway and crashed into the Subaru.
Bain was thrown into the main lanes, where he was struck by a westbound vehicle that failed to stop at the scene.
Bain was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford and four passengers in that vehicle were all injured and were transported to a hospital.
Simpson was later caught by the police and taken into custody. He was charged with DUI, Hit-and-run, and driving with a suspended license.
