Driver Arrested After Striking Bicyclist; Victim In Critical Condition

Berkeley, CA – Berkeley police have arrested a driver for suspicion of DUI after striking a cyclist in a crosswalk.

At 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 3, emergency personnel were dispatched to a location on the UC Berkeley campus. Upon arrival, police found a woman stuck beneath a vehicle.

The woman was badly injured, and the car had to be lifted to gain access to her, according to Lt. Dan Montgomery of the Berkeley Fire Department.

According to witness reports, the woman traveling in the southbound lane when he was struck. The woman was pulled beneath the car and dragged for a short distance before stopping.

The cyclist, identified as Meg Schwarzmann, received life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The driver was detained on suspicion of DUI. Further charges may be pending, according to police. He was not injured according to police.

“Charges could definitely be upgraded if the woman dies,” said Montgomery.

Traffic was diverted around the intersection while police and fire personnel took measurements of the scene.
