OAKLAND, Calif. – A person died and three people were injured when a vehicle drove off the embankment along Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland.

Multiple people reported a single car accident on the interstate flying over the embankment in Oakland shortly around 12:30 a.m. The vehicle headed westbound on Interstate-580 at 98th Avenue, reported an official from the California Highway Patrol.

The 19974 Toyota Corolla sat in the embankment when officers arrived on the scene. The embankment divided the westbound lane on the highway and the Golf Links Road ramp to the highway, stated the California Highway Patrol.

Two people were trapped inside the Toyota, while two other people were lying on the ground as a result from being thrown out of the vehicle.

The vehicle was travelling the Interstate between the speeds of 75 and 85 mph when the driver lost control of the car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities pronounced the passenger sitting in the front of the car dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not been released.

Firefighters extricated the 21-year old male driver from the damaged Toyota. The paramedics transported the driver to a nearby hospital to treat his serious injuries.

The two ejected victims, a 29-year old female and a 23-year old male, both from Oakland, were also rushed to the hospital to treat their injuries, stated an official with the California Highway Patrol.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol ruled out alcohol and drugs as a contributing factor of the deadly accident.
