Pedestrians typically feel safe when they cross the road. Numerous safety features have been placed on our roads to keep pedestrians safe, including crosswalks and lights. Unfortunately, these features depend on pedestrians to remain aware of their surroundings and that drivers follow the rules of the road. Unfortunately, in early May an elderly woman was crossing the street and was stricken by a car.
Marie Meza Aguirre was crossing the Cottonwood Road at around 8 pm when she was hit by a car. Authorities arrived at the scene, and the car was still there. They sent her to a nearby hospital where doctors attempted to treat her injuries. Unfortunately, treating her injuries simply wasn’t enough. The woman was declared dead not long after she arrived at the hospital. The driver did remain at the scene and gave a full report on the event. The police declared the incident an accident and they do not believe that drugs or alcohol played any role in the accident.
Pedestrians expect a certain level of safety when crossing the street, but sometimes accidents do happen. Unfortunately, an accident did happen and Bakersfield lost the life of an elderly woman. While the driver is not at fault, one hopes that other drivers will be careful when driving through pedestrian rich areas.
