Woman killed in Gardena head-on collision

A Los Angeles woman was killed on Dec. 23 after her car struck a tractor-trailer head on in Gardena. The accident occurred at around 3:56 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the 23-year-old was driving her Nissan Sentra west on El Segundo Boulevard when it side-swiped a tractor-trailer sitting in the center turn lane. The impact caused the Nissan to spin into eastbound traffic, where it smashed into another oncoming big rig.
Local media said it took Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel 15 minutes to cut the driver from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A front-seat passenger, said to be a teenage girl, was also extricated from the vehicle and transported to an area trauma center with undisclosed injuries.
Witnesses told authorities that the Nissan driver may have been using her cell phone at the time of the collision. Crews did not clear the scene until around 10 p.m.
