One man was ejected from his car onto a freeway exit sign on Friday morning. The accident occurred at 7 in the morning around Griffith Park near Glendale, California, on 5 highway just north of California 134. The freeway was initially closed and reopened at 11 a.m.
The 20-year-old driver, Richard Pananian, was traveling erratically down the highway in a Ford Focus at a high rate of speed when he hit a pickup truck and was overturned. The driver was ejected from the car and landed on the sign for exit 142 at California St. Pananian was not wearing his seat belt.
The body landed 20 feet in the air on the highway sign. He was initially covered with a blanket until the Los Angeles Fire Department could arrive. It took several ladders, rope, and a fire truck to remove the body.
The three passengers in the pickup truck were not injured.
