South Los Angeles Gas Explosion Leaves 2 Injured

South Los Angeles, California (March 18, 2019) – Two people were injured, one seriously, in a gas explosion that happened Sunday morning in South Los Angeles, a local news source reported.

As per the article, firefighters responded to the 216 block of West Slauson Avenue at around 7:45 a.m. following reports of the smell of gas in the air.

The firefighters arrived in the area and found a leaking tanker. Ignition from an unknown source came into contact with the fumes, and the tanker exploded into flames. The firefighters were forced back.

Capt. Cody Weireter of the Los Angeles Fire Department said a manhole was displaced when fumes in the storm drain ignited and created underground pressure.

The flames hit nearby structures including a two-story single-family home. The fire damaged the home displacing the family members.

Two people were injured in the incident, one of them seriously. The firefighters were not hurt in the accident.

Initial reports indicated that the fuel type was natural gas, but it was established to be gasoline.

Arson investigators and LAFD Hazardous Materials specialists also responded to the scene.
