Studio City, CA – A man riding a bicycle was struck and killed about 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning in North Hollywood.

Studio City police arrived at the intersection of Ventura Place and Radford Avenue to find an unresponsive man laying in the street.

The man was later identified as Cairo Joseph Casteneda, 42, of North Hollywood.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Casteneda was struck by a trash truck as he rode through the Radford Avenue intersection, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Ricardo Hernandez.

Neither drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The Casteneda family has set up a Gofundme page to raise money for funeral expenses. He was on his way to work when the accident happened, according to a family member.

Several bicyclists in the community gathered at the spot where Casteneda was killed and chained a “ghost bike” to the tree in commemoration of he and other bikers who have been killed.

“At least two dozen individuals have been killed on bicycles in the region this year, said bicycle safety advocate Danny Gamboa.

Another resident, Katherine Savage, says she doesn’t feel safe riding her bike. “The infrastructure just isn’t bicycle friendly.
