A large cash reward has been offered to anyone who knows of the driver of a hit-and-run that left an Orange County man in critical condition.

Chris Chavez was struck while crossing the street in Santa Ana at the intersection between Bristol Street and Central Avenue. Unfortunately, recent news suggests that Chavez would not survive. The family plans on making the 26 year old drum line instructor a donor. His father stated that the family had a lot of healing to do and that he prays that the driver of the BMW who hit him will do the right thing.

On April 20, Chavez had the green light when he began crossing the street. A BMW ran the red light and struck him. A video from the scene shows a woman getting out of the car, looking at Chavez, and driving off. The $20,000 reward should act as incentive to find the woman, who is guilty of manslaughter. Chavez’ father hopes the potential of receiving the reward will give them a better chance of finding who seriously injured their son.

Almost 5,000 pedestrians died in accidents in 2013, representing an increase in such accidents from past years. Awareness is key to preventing such accidents and making sure these incidents do not happen with frequency in the future. Some places are less pedestrian-friendly than others and represent a bigger threat for those that habitually walk to their destinations.
