Wrong-way driver causes fatal collision in Irvine

Nov. 10, 2015

A Gardena woman was killed and four others were injured in a three-vehicle crash in Irvine early Nov. 10. Police said the crash was caused by a wrong-way driver.

According to authorities, 54-year-old Rieko Toyama was driving her 2010 Nissan southbound in a northbound lane of I-405 when she struck an oncoming 2014 BMW near Harvard Avenue at approximately 1:20 a.m. The Nissan flipped onto its roof and Toyama was partially ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the BMW, identified as 29-year-old Hassan Kadri, and his passenger, 29-year-old Sabina Teodorescu, suffered major injuries and were transported to UCI Medical Center.

After the first crash, a 2008 Mercedes-Benz smashed into the flipped Nissan. Isabelo and Zoima Millanar, reportedly in their 70s, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
