INDIO, Calif. — A green car hit and killed a 73-year-old man in Indio Wednesday as he tried to cross the street on Fred Waring Drive close to Clinton Street.

Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall reported, Indio resident Geronimo Meza approximately 2:20 p.m. stepped off the sidewalk and entered the closest lane on Fred Waring Drive.

A green 4-door Toyota Camry, driving west on Fred Waring Drive, struck Meza. The 73-year old man died at the scene.

Meza did not cross the street at a designated pedestrian crossing area on Fred Waring Drive. Indio police did not cite the driver of the Toyota Camry since Meza did not enter Fred Waring Drive at an assigned crosswalk.

The Toyota Camry driver was not speeding nor under the influence of alcohol. The Indio police ruled out speed and alcohol as contributing factors of the fatal accident of Meza.

The deadly accident in Indio on Wednesday is a reminder for every pedestrian to cross the street at designated pedestrian crossings only, stated Marshall.

Designated crosswalks help pedestrians cross the street safely across the flow of traffic. In addition, pedestrian crossings help motorists see a group of pedestrians together.

“It’s a total accident,” Marshall said.
