Police across the country warn bicyclists not to ride on the road against the traffic. Though this may appear to be safer because the cyclists can see the oncoming vehicles, statistics prove that “salmon riders,” as they are called, are involved in many more accidents than those who ride with the traffic.
Unfortunately, a 54-yerar-old man riding through the community of Perris was hit and killed “riding salmon” on Fourth Street at 4:45 pm on April 20th. A work truck hit him, and he was immediately taken to the hospital where he died in under an hour later.
In this case, the cyclist could have chosen to ride with the traffic or on the sidewalk, which would have been safer. A bicyclist “riding salmon,” against the traffic, has a greater chance of being hit than those who ride with the traffic, report Los Angeles Police Department.
The victim was identified as Roger Villegas is a resident of Perris. He is the fourth bicycling fatality in Paris in the past three years and the 33rd in Southern California so far this year.
