According to a 2011, Department of Finance census, there are only three counties in California with a larger population than Riverside County. Riverside County is inland from the Pacific Coast and borders Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. The high population, is a result of the county now being considered part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Similar to Los Angeles, the many vehicles on the roads in this county generally leads to serious accidents. Within the City of Riverside are three major freeways:
• I-15, also called State Route 15
• I-10, known as the Santa Monica Freeway, and the San Bernardino Freeway
• I-215
It is not rare for accidents to occur on any of these heavily traveled freeways. Many result in serious injury or death. Just one of many car accidents on I-15, resulted in two deaths, one child with minor injuries, and a drunk driving arrest on April 22, 2016. Mother and son, were found trapped in the crashed SUV, and were pronounced dead at the scene. A nine-year old girl and the driver survived and got themselves out of the vehicle before CHP arrived. The young girl was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver was taken to Riverside Community Hospital where he was arrested and moved to a Detention Center in the area. The man faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, willfully bringing harm to a child, suspicion of murder, and vehicular manslaughter, and was immediately denied bail.
Details of the crash, investigated by CHP, indicate that the drunk driver was going about 60mph in a construction zone at about 9:25 pm on Friday. After the driver of the 2002 GMC Sierra swerved into the center divider, he drove into a ditch and hit construction materials, which caused the vehicle to roll over quite a few times. The identity and relationship of the four people in the SUV were not available until Monday morning.
