CARLSBAD, Calif. – A 4-door car struck and killed a woman cruising on her bicycle along the coast in Carlsbad Wednesday morning.
Joyce Koven Smith, the 59-year old victim, was traveling southbound in the designated bike lane and swerved towards traffic the same time a Ford Fiesta drove pass her going in the same direction on Carlsbad Boulevard. The accident occurred shortly after 10:15 a.m., said an unidentified witness.
A 64-year old woman drove the Ford and accidently struck Smith, a resident of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene while authorizes investigated.
According to the police, authorities closed Carlsbad Boulevard southbound lanes between Tierra Del Oro Street and Sequoia Avenue due to the deadly collision.
Erik Chase, a witness to the tragic accident, mentioned he saw her take her last breath and it was something that he would remember for a long time.
The driver of the vehicle stood with her head down and sobbed, said Chase.
Alcohol and drugs apparently were not contributing factors to the bike accident.
