A Cardiff-by-the-Sea woman is dead following a March 16 bicycle accident.

A 59-year-old cyclist has died following a collision between her bicycle and a Ford Fiesta.

The accident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on Carlsbad Boulevard, resulting in the closure of multiple lanes of traffic. Police officials arrived at the scene shortly after the accident occurred. Authorities closed Carlsbad Avenue from Tamarack Avenue and Cannon Road and redirected traffic.

The cyclist, whose name is being withheld, was traveling southbound in the bicycle lane when she swerved into the regular flow of traffic. She was struck by a Ford Fiesta, driven by a 64-year-old woman. The cyclist died during the crash.

The driver of the Fiesta remained on-scene and cooperated with police officials. It is not believed that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, but authorities launched an ongoing investigation into the matter.

A 2014 article by the Los Angeles Times stated that between “2010 and 2012, more than 330 California cyclists were killed in accidents.” The same article notes that California leads the nation in the number of bicycle traffic deaths.

Police authorities did tell reporters that the cyclist is survived by her husband.
