Four people killed in Escondido rollover accident

Dec. 21, 2015

On Dec. 21, four Loma Linda residents were killed in a car accident in Escondido. Authorities said one child was among the victims.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 25-year-old man was driving a 2014 Chevy Sonic east on Highway 78 near Nordahl Road when he attempted to change lanes and saw another vehicle in his path at the last moment. He swerved to avoid a collision and hit a 2003 Toyota Sequoia van. Both vehicles veered off the road and went down an embankment. The van rolled over and smashed into a tree.

Three women, ages 75, 65 and 40, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A 9-year-old boy also died at the scene. Three other female occupants of the van were transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the Sonic was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, but he was later released without being charged. Police said they do not believe alcohol, drugs or speed played a role in the crash.
