Man Killed in 3-Vehicle Crash after Running Out of Gas on I-696 in Macomb County

Macomb County,  Michigan (March 28, 2018) – A man who ran out of gas was on Tuesday afternoon hit and killed while making a refill at the side of the roadway in Macomb County.

According to Michigan State Police, the fatal crash took place on Interstate 696 at Dequindre Road on Tuesday, March 27.

Police said a man driving a passenger car ran out of gas and pulled his vehicle to the side of the roadway. He then contacted his father, who took gas to the place he was stranded to assist him.

As the man was refilling his tank, another driver lost control and crashed into him.  The father’s vehicle was also involved in the collision.

The man who was refilling the tank was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver who lost control sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he was to be tested for alcohol and drugs.

The Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the crash and have not released the details of the deceased victim.
