Miguel Rolon, a 59-year-old man of Thermal, was pronounced dead after a fatal accident on Interstate 10 in Cabazon.
According to California Highway Patrol, the fatal accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. between Main street and Haugen Lehman Way.
Rolon’s flatbed truck was broken down in the No. 3 lane shortly after 11 a.m. He was waving traffic around his stalled semi by standing on top of his truck. A traveling FedEx truck then struck the side of Rolon’s flatbed, sending him airborne and onto the road where he was pronounced deceased.
The FedEx driver and passenger sustained minor injuries and spilled 50-gallons of diesel onto the roadway. Hazmat was then called to respond to the scene.
This accident then sent a chain reaction, causing two additional semi-trucks to collide. California Highway Patrol reported no injuries from this secondary accident.
CHP also reported no drugs nor alcohol played a factor in either wreck.
