Reckless driving is usually unintentional. Accidents are often a result of negligence or impairment. But when street racing causes accidents and takes lives, recklessness comes center stage. That is what happened in the recent crash that killed three.
Shortly after midnight, the drivers of two vehicles were racing near Washington Boulevard. During the race, one of the vehicles spun out of control, shifted into another lane and collided with a big rig truck associated with UPS. The truck also spun out of control and eventually flipped over, crashing into several other vehicles. As a result of the incident, three people died on the scene. Four were injured and given emergency treatment.
One of the street racers will be charged with vehicular manslaughter. He admitted to the authorities that he was, in fact, street racing.
During the race, the driver attempted to swerve around a slower vehicle (slow only because it was not involved in a street race). As he applied his breaks, the vehicle spun out of control, causing him to crash into a UPS truck.
Witnesses report that the big rig flew into the air and proceeded to collide with a smaller vehicle, eventually landing on top of a Ford Explorer. The driver of the big rig was among the deceased.
The other street racer has not yet been apprehended.
