An Elk Grove man was killed when the pickup truck he was driving was struck head-on by a FedEx big rig. The crash happened on the West Side Highway in south Sacramento about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. Weather was a likely factor, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley.

Bradley told reporters the FedEx truck had been traveling southbound during heavy rain when the driver lost control. The double-trailered semi veered into the center median and crossed into the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, where it slammed into the northbound pickup truck. The pickup’s driver, 45-year-old Elijah Jackson was killed instantly.

The FedEx tractor-trailer was empty at the time of the crash. No one else was injured.

Northbound I-5 was shut down at Seamus Avenue and Fruit Ridge Road until early afternoon. One lane of I-5 in each direction remained closed until Thursday night so that crews could repair the concrete median barrier.
